The original soundtrack to The Taking of Pelham 123 by David Shire.

In a similar vein the Dirty Harry soundtrack by Lalo Schifrin is fantastic.

Morricone did a very good job of producing a Carpenter-esque score for The Thing.
Very clever and still brilliant
